About the Event

July's box contains all the items you need to complete this month's craft project: 2 pieces of sashiko homeware - a coaster and a placemat. You'll also get access to a recording of the live stream workshop which aired in July 2021.

We're really excited to offer you the chance to experience an ancient craft steeped in the culture & tradition. Sashiko, meaning ‘little stab’, has it's origins in Japan and is the art of embroidering beautiful patterns using running stitch. Often used to add strength, texture and warmth to old garments, Sashiko has become synonymous with complex repeating patterns and precise stitching.

Your workshop leader is the amazing Yiran from Yi Crafts, who started her business in 2020 to offer people the chance to experience Chinese ethnic minorities' traditional cultural crafts. As a member of southern China’s Bai minority ethnicity, she is interested in the conservation of ethnic minority craft techniques and her practice has focused on how to combine embroidery and traditional elements from Chinese costumes with Western techniques to explore intercultural connections!

Through this workshop, you will learn the history and cultural background of Sashiko stitch and try out two different designs, making your own placemat and coaster. With these basic principles & techniques,  you will be able to carry out more projects by yourself after this workshop!

The following will be in your box:

  • 1 Sashiko needle
  • 1 skein of 30m Sashiko thread
  • 1 life of flower round placemat
  • 1 woven diamond coaster

All you'll need to provide yourself is a pair of scissors.

If you're buying this box for someone else, you can include their details at the check out.  The box will be sent directly to the recipient's address, and we will send email instructions for the live stream workshop to their email address.
